Phoenix Suns Notes, Quotes 2009-09-19

Phoenix Suns Notes, Quotes 2009-09-19--After dumping Sasha Pavlovic, the Suns have the minimum 13 players on their roster and can use a few more camp bodies for the trip to San Diego next month. Burly forward Carlos Powell, who played with Lopez, Clark and Goran Dragic on the Suns summer teams, is working out with the regulars and appears to have a training camp ticket reserved. The 6-foot-7, 225-pounder out of South Carolina averaged 22.5 points and 6.4 rebounds in 48 games with Dakota Wizards of the NBDL in 2007-08 and played in Korea last year.

--It figured that the cutting-edge Suns would be ready to take advantage of the newest available revenue stream offered up by the league -- selling rights to the practice floor and jerseys. The Suns quickly followed the trailblazing Nets and signed a six-figure, multiyear deal with Annexus Group, a Scottsdale-based annuity company. The Phoenix Mercury, who share the same practice floor with the Suns, became the first WNBA team to put a company name on their game jerseys when they signed a deal with LifeLock this spring.

--Sasha Pavlovic gave the Suns a discount on his buyout agreement (the $250,000 was double for Phoenix with the luxury tax) because he already had another deal in his back pocket. Before the ink was dry in Phoenix, Pavlovic had signed a one-year, $1.5 million deal with Minnesota, meaning he'll make $2.75 million this year in total.

--Suns chairman Jerry Colangelo accepted the Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award Award for his good friend, the late Johnny "Red" Kerr. Colangelo brought Kerr with him from Chicago to Phoenix in 1968 and made him the first coach of the Suns -- and eventually replaced him after a year-and-a-half. Kerr died in late February, about two weeks after learning that he was a finalist for the Hall of Fame. He was not selected.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "It wouldn't make sense for us from a business standpoint to let him go just to let him go. We also understood Sasha's desire to move over with his career, find the right team and get to training camp. It worked out for both sides." -- Suns GM Steve Kerr after buying out Sasha Pavlovic's contract for $1.25 million.
